High Holidays

Join us this High Holy Day season!

Welcome from Rabbi Scher

Dear Friends,

There’s a story told by Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, the 19th-century founder of the Mussar movement—a movement in Judaism that focuses on cultivating personal development and inner growth.

One Elul, as Rosh Hashanah approached, Rabbi Salanter passed a cobbler’s workshop late at night. The man was still working by the light of a small oil lamp, mending shoes.

“Why are you up working so late?” asked Rabbi Salanter.

The cobbler replied, “As long as the candle is still burning, it’s possible to repair.”

Rabbi Salanter would repeat those words for the rest of his life: “As long as the candle is still burning, it’s possible to repair.”

This past year, our Jewish world has felt tested beyond measure; by surges in antisemitism, by painful news from Israel, by the weariness of constantly carrying the weight of our nation's challenges. Even in our own lives, many of us are entering this Rosh Hashanah feeling emotionally spent.

And yet, our candle is still burning.

Here in our community, we have leaned on each other, celebrated each other’s simchas, shown up for one another in moments of need, and stood proudly together as Jews. Those acts of connection, presence, and unity are the steady flames that have kept our light alive.

Rosh Hashanah calls us not just to look back, but to look forward. It is our chance to breathe in new energy and to believe that our inner and collective light can shine more brightly in the year to come. The shofar’s cry reminds us that what is broken can be made whole—our relationships, our commitments, our hope for the future.

We are deeply grateful to serve as your Rabbinic family and to walk this journey of Jewish life together with each and every one of you.

May this new year of 5786 bring renewal for our community here and around the world, for our beloved Israel, and for each of us. And may we always remember: as long as the candle is still burning, it is possible to repair.
